Taking apart gadgets such as a travel alarm clock, disposable camera, headphones, propelling pencil or a TV remote control is a great way of exploring beneath the surface of objects. It encourages students to question and find out how something works, and how it was made.
NOTE: If you are running this activity with younger children, please supervise them, as some items will contain small parts or sharp points.
- Investigate the design, function and properties of materials that are used in the engineering of everyday objects
- Use observation and questioning (curiosity) skills
- Recognise how understanding the properties of materials is useful and can be applied to everything we use
